A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
