A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
